What is Berberine hydrochloride

Berberine hydrochloride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C20H18ClNO4. It is a yellow crystalline powder. It is easily soluble in boiling water, slightly soluble in cold water, and almost insoluble in cold ethanol, chloroform and ether. It is mainly used as an antibacterial agent against Shigella dysenteriae. , Escherichia coli, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Typhoid bacilli and amoeba. It is mainly used clinically for intestinal infections and dysentery. It has also been found that this product has anti-arrhythmic effects.
Berberine hydrochloride has a broad antibacterial spectrum and has antibacterial effects on a variety of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria in vitro, including hemolytic Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio cholerae. Meningococci, Shigella dysenteriae, Typhoid bacilli, Diphtheria bacilli, etc. have strong inhibitory effects. They are bacteriostatic at low concentrations and sterilizing at high concentrations. It also has certain inhibitory effects on influenza viruses, amoeba, leptospira, and certain skin fungi. In vitro experiments have confirmed that berberine can enhance the phagocytic ability of leukocytes and liver reticuloendothelial system. Shigella dysenteriae, hemolytic Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, etc. are easily resistant to this product. There is no cross-resistance between this product and penicillin and streptomycin.
