What is Pyrethrin

Pyrethrins are a type of broad-spectrum insecticide that can control a variety of pests. Its insecticidal toxicity is 10 to 100 times higher than that of older generation insecticides such as organochlorines, organophosphorus, and carbamates. Pyrethroids have strong contact killing effects on insects, and some species have gastric poisoning or fumigation effects, but none have systemic effects. Its mechanism of action is to disrupt the normal physiology of insect nerves, causing them to go from excitement, spasm to paralysis and death. Due to their small dosage and low concentration, pyrethroids are safer for humans and animals and cause little environmental pollution. Its main disadvantages are that it is highly toxic to fish and harmful to some beneficial insects. Long-term repeated use can also lead to the development of insecticide resistance in pests.

Source of Pyrethrin

Pyrethrins are derived from Pyrethrum alba, a collective name for several plants of the genus Tanacetum, native to southwestern Asia; the aromatic flower heads are ground into powder, which can constitute the active ingredient of insecticides, called pyrethrin or pyrethrum. This type of plant used to be considered a separate genus, Pyrethrum. The typical species is the perennial red-flowered pyrethrum (T. coccineum). Its large deep rose-red tongue-shaped flowers surround a central yellow tubular flower disk. The entire flower head grows on the top of an unbranched stem; the leaves are finely notched. Modern varieties of ligulate flowers also appear in white, lavender, and various shades of red.
