An Overview of Oxymatrine
Sophora flavescens contains a large number of alkaloids, among which the highest content is matrine and oxymatrine, which together account for 2% of the total dry weight of the roots of flavescens (most of which exist in the form of oxymatrine). At the same time, there are other similar alkaloids: mainly Sophocarpine (C15H22N2O), also contains a small amount of sophoranol, sophoramine, sophoridine (Sophoridine) allomatrine, isomatrine (Iosmatrine), etc. other alkaloid components. These components were initially isolated and discovered from Sophora flavescens in 1958~1978.
Oxymatrine (Matrine and oxymatrine) is an alkaloid found in the root of Sophora japonica, the main plant source is Sophora japonica (kushen), and it can also be extracted from other plants, such as Sophora subprostrata (shandougen ), and the aerial parts of Sophora alopecuroides.
The molecular formula of oxymatrine is C15H24N2O2·H2O, and the molecular weight is 264.363. It used to be called matrine for injection, oxymatrine, and Fickgant. This product is a mixed base of oxymatrine (Oxymatrine) and a very small amount of oxysophocarpine (Oxysophocarpine).

Applications of Oxymatrine
Oxymatrine is the main active ingredient in the whitening effect of matrine. It has the effects of clearing heat and dampness, diuresis and detoxification, improving symptoms and signs of hepatitis, reducing jaundice, and reducing enzymes. It can inhibit the replication of hepatitis B virus, induce endogenous interferon, protect liver cells, improve liver function, resist liver fibrosis, increase white blood cells and resist tumors. Oxymatrine shows strong antiviral activity against HBV in vitro and in animal models, and also has anti-HBV effect in human body.
There are different reports on the effects of oxymatrine on immune function. It is generally believed that it is a two-way immunomodulator, which can stimulate lymphocyte proliferation at low concentrations and inhibit it at high concentrations.
