What is Cholesterol Powder
Cholesterol is a derivative of cyclopentane polyhydrophenanthrene. It is a white or light yellow crystal. 1 is the main steroid compound in mammals and plays an important role in basic cell life activities.
Cholesterol exists inside and outside cells, interacting with adjacent lipids on the cell membrane to regulate membrane fluidity and permeability. In addition, cholesterol can bind to a variety of transmembrane proteins, helping to maintain and change their conformations. At the plasma membrane, cholesterol is often associated with sphingolipids and glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins to form microdomains that play roles in regulating membrane trafficking, signal transduction, and resistance to host pathogens.
Most of the cholesterol present in the blood is cholesterol esters combined with fatty acids, and less than 10% of the cholesterol exists in the free state. The cholesterol content in the blood is between 140 and 199 mg per unit, which is a relatively normal cholesterol level. The liver and intestinal mucosa are the main sites for cholesterol synthesis in the body. 70% to 80% of cholesterol in the human body is synthesized by the liver, and 10% is synthesized by the small intestine.
Metabolism of Cholesterol in the Human Body
In the blood, cholesterol can be transformed through a series of enzymes and metabolic pathways, and participates in the metabolism of various substances in the body, including the metabolism of sugar, protein, fat, water, electrolytes, minerals, etc.
Conversion into bile salts:
about 80% of cholesterol in the human body can be converted into bile acids in the liver. Bile acids exist in the form of sodium or potassium salts, called bile salts. After the fat is emulsified, part of the bile acid is absorbed by the small intestine and then re-used along with the blood to the liver and gallbladder. Its main physiological function is to promote the digestion and absorption of lipids.
Conversion to vitamin D:
In liver and intestinal mucosal cells, cholesterol can be oxidized and converted into 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is transported to the skin through blood circulation. 7-dehydrocholesterol can be transformed into vitamin D by ultraviolet irradiation, which can promote the absorption of calcium and phosphorus.
Conversion into steroid hormones:
Cholesterol is converted into steroid hormones such as testosterone, cortisol and androgens in endocrine glands (such as adrenal glands, testicles, and ovaries). After these hormones play a regulatory role, they can lose their activity through reactions such as reduction, hydrolysis, and combination in the liver, and then they are excreted with urine.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL):
It is a group of plasma lipoproteins with the smallest diameter (7~12mm) but the highest density (1.063~1.25g/ml). In normal plasma, most HDL particles are spherical and consist of a hydrophobic core surrounded by phospholipids, unacylated cholesterol, and apolipoproteins. HDL-C can transport cholesterol from extrahepatic tissues to the liver for metabolism and be eliminated from the body through bile. HDL particles also have multiple functions such as promoting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-thrombotic functions.
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL):
Known as “bad cholesterol”, it is mainly responsible for transporting cholesterol from the liver to various tissue cells in the body, but is not responsible for taking back the sent cholesterol. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL) mainly participates in the formation of atherosclerosis by damaging endothelial cells, promoting foam cell formation, promoting the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and causing platelet adhesion and aggregation.
Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL):
mainly contains triacylglycerol, cholesterol and lipoproteins. VLDL is synthesized in the liver and transports triacylglycerol and cholesterol through the blood to tissues. Very low-density lipoprotein in blood may be an important cause of endothelial cell damage. There are protective factors in plasma that can bind to non-esterified free fatty acids and reduce the accumulation of triacylglycerol (TG) in blood vessels. When the ratio of plasma albumin/very low-density lipoprotein decreases, triacylglycerol can accumulate in blood vessels and further damage vascular endothelial cells. In addition, high concentrations of very low-density lipoprotein enhance lipid peroxidation, which is also a possible factor leading to endothelial cell damage.
