Introduction to Bromelain

Bromelain Chemical Properties

Preparation method of Bromelain

Take fresh and clean pineapple peels, spines, cores and other scraps with a juice yield of more than 45%, squeeze them, extract the juice and filter out the fruit debris. Add 0.025-0.05% benzoic acid to the filtrate and add 5% kaolin for adsorption. After adjusting the pH of the kaolin adsorbent to 6.7-7.0 with saturated sodium carbonate solution, add 5% sodium chloride, stir and filter. Take the filtrate and adjust the pH to 4.8-5.1 with hydrochloric acid, add ammonium sulfate, let it stand and precipitate, take the precipitate and dry it under reduced pressure, which is bromelain.

Pharmacological effects of Bromelain

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme extracted from pineapple juice and can be used clinically as an anti-edema and anti-inflammatory drug. After oral administration, it can strengthen the hydrolysis of fibrin in the body, dissolve fibrin and blood clots blocking tissues, thereby improving local circulation of body fluids and leading to the elimination of inflammation and edema. Used together with antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, it can promote the penetration and spread of drugs into lesions. Its advantage is that it breaks down the macromolecules of fibrin without destroying fibrinogen, which is necessary for blood clotting.
