Rosmarinic acid (RosA for short) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C18H16O8. It is a water-soluble natural phenolic acid compound isolated from rosemary, a plant of the Lamiaceae family.

Rosmarinic acid is widely distributed and mainly exists in various plants of Lamiaceae, Boraginaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Tiliaceae, and Apiaceae, with the highest content in Lamiaceae and Boraginaceae plants.

Physical and chemical properties of Rosmarinic Acid

Rosmarinic acid is a water-soluble substance. The source of rosemary is light yellow to brown powder at low levels and white powder at high levels. It absorbs moisture easily and has the special herbal smell of rosemary. The melting point is 171℃~175℃. Ferric chloride-potassium ferricyanide solution appears blue-green.

Light has a greater impact on rosmarinic acid, so avoid light as much as possible when using it; Ca2+ and Mg2+ have a greater impact on the stability of rosmarinic acid, while other metal ions have less impact on rosmarinic acid.
